Every professional should work on completing the “Competent Communicator” path at a local club or online. Regular practice in front of experienced public speakers will build strong speaking skills.

Don’t open your presentation with negative statements: “I’m new at this (or I’m nervous, or this is my first time presenting, etc.), so please have patience (or forgive my nervousness, or bear with me….etc.).” You risk undermining the audience’s confidence in you and what you are about to share. Most people expect a speaker to be somewhat nervous initially – you don’t need to confirm that for them. The focus should be on engaging your audience, not about confessing your discomfort. Breathe, smile, and start!
