This truth is often unwelcome because most of us wish it weren’t the case. If this rings a bell for you, you can complain that life is unfair because success is all about who you know, or you can get over yourself and make it your business to get to know people. This may sound harsh, especially if you are extremely shy or introverted. I am sorry for that. If you need help with how to go about building and nurturing a solid network, you can find my article about relationship mapping here and more tips here. […]

I agree that when we focus on empowering others, it fosters a deeper respect and loyalty from the people around us. The example of Jesus is so fitting—true leadership isn’t about climbing to the top, but about lifting others up. I’ve found that when you put others’ needs first, it creates a stronger, more connected team environment.

Pure and simple. The remainder is evenly divided between support of executive leadership’s investments in commercial real estate (which took a dive with widespread WFH, and could be illegal if the decision makers have a fiduciary responsibility to the company), stupidity, and incompetence. Most CEO’s are neither stupid nor incompetent, so assuming underhanded motives is safe here.

It can also be considered a gift to the rest of the labor market, matching talented people with sane leaders who make data-driven decisions.

It will only made this young man stronger in his battle.

You succeeded in coaching him and bringing up to speed, but unfortunately, the young man has a bad character. If you start telling him how bad you feel, he will take it as the invite to continue.

There are only 2 ways to stop it and teach him a lesson: 1) fire him; 2) make it unpleasant for him to go on slandering your name. You can fire him and let him know that he failed to establish good communication. Or you start calling things as they are – arrogance, lack of ethics, self-absorption, poor judgment. Yeah, this young man has a great potential but exhibits poor judgment and narrow vision. He is good for some tasks though. Start communicating the truth to others.

It reminds me of the different situations that I have experienced in my professional development, both in conflict situations with my new supervisors that have led me to grow, abandoning the environment that that person controlled, escalating the situation with the boss’s boss, and in other situations, where the imbalance of power was favored on my side, which led me to have interesting experiences and learnings, although the best growth experience was when there was balance in power relationships with shared objectives, which led to success in the projects that we had assigned.
With the description of this model I can compare my experiences and share more appropriately to accompany my clients to achieve their objectives in the different environments where they operate.
Thank you.

I recall feeling frightened and unsure of what to anticipate. That’s when a coworker suggested “Extreme Ownership” by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. This book not only helped me prepare for the review, but it also taught me a lot about accepting responsibility for my performance and behavior. It taught me to view comments with a fresh perspective, learn from my mistakes, and strive for constant growth. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who is facing a performance evaluation or wants to improve their leadership abilities. Check it at https://echelonfront.com/books/.

In addition to the model suggested in this article, I found it particularly effective to set “performance empowerment conversations” where the leaders would set and “Listen” to employee and learn more what he/she can do to help the employee perform at a higher level. It is great regularly coach the employees and help them learn skills / knowledge needed for them to do the job well, in my view it is equally important for the #leader to learn from the employee as well.

Somehow I missed your article (Who’s Got Your Back?…)for so many years and have just read it. It is brief but phenomenal. Now that I dont have work colleagues, I am going to apply the learning to my outsourced collaborators and familial relationships – my wife, children, siblings, cousins, domestic help. I’m now more mindful about the fact that I depend on them for my success, but have not thought about my relationship with them as deeply and systematically as I should have. Your section regarding the ability to ask effective questions is spot on. I would take it even a little further and ask something like, “When I mention the word feedback, how does that make you feel?” Similar to your questions, the opportunity to explore and allow the manager to disciover is key. Once responded, use the team members words to delve deeper through paraphrasing and more questions. It is fascinating how often people come to their own conclusions with the right, supported conversation. The best feedback is self-feedback. That is where the power of effective questionning comes in.

I would also add, there is too much definiton of feedback as positive, negative or similar. It is feedback, full-stop. As soon as we mentally prepare for these discussions as ‘tough conversations’, ‘difficult feedback’ and similar, there is a subtle and unconscious tendency to present it that way through tone, intonation, language etc.

See it for what it is – earn the right to have the conversation; make sure it is owned; and follow-up. If this teamm member has genuinely been given the opportunity for growth and is supported, yet continues to reject the development, then that is why she is not ready for promotion. It can’t be both ways.

Attention spans of “buyers” have shortened (whether for valid reasons or not) so it’s easier to say “Yes” to the wrong employer or engagement and find oneself working far below one’s aptitude or interest (and feel unchallenged and much less creative.)

Do people have to pay bills, etc.? Yes (and I recognize my guidance may not be practical for some.) Being unhappy at work (whether working from your kitchen table or in a 21st Century “Open Space” often translates to unhappiness in the rest of one’s life.
