She is depleting your self-esteem deliberately to ensure: a) you work harder to please her, b) you respect her because she is better than you, c) you don’t believe you are good enough to leave. I have the same predisposition and I can tell you these people are everywhere. They’re smart enough to realise that they’re not the smartest person in the room, and will punish you for daring to be smarter than them. Telling them to reign it in can work for a while, but it is a reflexive tendency so under stress they tend to revert back with even more gusto from the pent up abuse they’ve been reigning in. You can either quit or change your reaction to it with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
